Survey Insight: Compliance Is Key
Recently, we ran a survey with bed and mattress manufacturers to better understand their biggest challenges when it comes to labels. The results were clear: the most common difficulty reported was compliance. Many manufacturers told us they struggle to keep up with ever-changing regulations, especially when it comes to fire-safety standards.
That’s why we wanted to highlight the latest updates.
Regulatory Updates: What’s Changed?
The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) (Amendment) Regulations 2025, that came into effect on 30 October 2025, introduced several important changes:
1. Display Labels / Swing Tags Removed
The amendment removes the requirement for a display label (swing tag) at the point of sale – including online and second-hand sales.
However, every product must still carry a permanent label declaring that the item complies with the relevant fire-safety requirements.
2. Permanent Labels Still Essential
Your permanent mattress label must continue to include:
- Compliance with relevant fire-safety requirements
- Manufacturer or importer details
- Fibre content
- Any other legally required information
Businesses may continue selling stock with labels compliant under the 1988 regulations, provided the label correctly demonstrates compliance.
3. Fire-Safety Testing Requirements
The amendment does not remove or reduce fire-safety obligations. Components must still meet strict ignitability standards based on BS 7177, including:
- Filling materials: required ignition performance
- Upholstery composites: cigarette resistance
- Cover materials: match resistance
4. Commercial Use Requirements Remain
For mattresses used in hotels, care homes, student accommodation, and other commercial environments, the Crib 5 / Medium Hazard rating (BS 7177) remains essential.
5. Online Sellers
Products sold online must still include a permanent label showing compliance. Swing tags are no longer required for e-commerce.
