A committee from the retail sector gathered 50 years ago to create and approve a universal product code. This was transformed into the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), which is the number that appears under barcodes and is currently used to identify billions of products all over the world. Now, every day, more than 10 billion GTINs are scanned.
